WHY WE WALK!

Team Shawn was started in 2007 after our oldest son Shawn was diagnosed with
Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 20. After nearly a two year battle, Shawn ultimately lost the fight. We are here to be advocates on behalf of Shawn and all those who lost their lives fighting blood cancers.

This blog follows Team Shawn and their 2011/2012 fund raising efforts. All proceeds raised will go to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK" at the Reston Town Center in Reston, VA for research and family support. For the past two years, Team Shawn raised a lofty goal of $10,000. We are reaching for the sky this year again! Our goal is to raise another $10,000 for this event! Yes, folks---$10,000! We have many ways to reach this lofty goal. We will reach it and more!!! Along the way we hope to have lots of fun and make new friends as well!

Team Shawn Helps Gabriella Make A Wish!

12/1/12

Gabriella Miller was a happy-go-lucky fourth grader in Northern Virginia until three weeks ago when she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of inoperable brain cancer. Now Gabriella endures an almost-daily regimen of grueling radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

When Gabriella learned she qualified for the "Make-A-Wish" Foundation, she was delighted to submit her wish, which is to visit Paris, France. But Gabriella is the kind of child who doesn't like to 'get' something without giving something back. So Gabriella is asking all of her friends near and far to join her in writing letters to Santa Claus because if Macy's receives 1,000,000 letters to Santa before Christmas, the company will donate $1,000,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Talk about supporting thy neighbor...I just received word that another nonprofit in our area, "Team Shawn," an organization formed in memory of Shawn Haines, wrote a $500 check to Gabriella to cover her shopping expenses in Paris. That is A LOT of baguettes and eclairs! Thank you Gloria Haines. This campaign is for Shawn and so many other young people affected by cancer. Can everyone please post "SHAWN'S SPIRIT LIVES ON!" in the comments section of this post? Hugs to Team Shawn.

Big Thanks to Earth Works Gallery & Gift Shop

The Business of Service

"Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms." 1 Peter 4:10

At EarthWorks we have a two-fold mission.  First, to support local artists and craftsmen by partnering with them to handle the "business end" of selling what they create with their "gifts".  Second, to create community as an extension of our business.  What does that mean - to create community?

For us, it means that we have a goal not just to sell the work of local artists, but to bring people together for inspiration, encouragement, ideas,  and fellowship. Through this, we can encourage more and more people to look locally for their products, services, causes - everything.

A natural extension to that is service.  I don't mean customer service, and I don't mean a service offering.  I mean serving others.  Sometimes that means volunteering at an event, or baking for a fundraiser or helping out at the school.  It always means giving of yourself for another.

And this is why we are so pleased to introduce our newest artisan to the team.  Or should I say artisan team to our little shop.  Team Shawn Foundation is headed by Gloria Haines in memory of her son, Shawn, who lost his battle with cancer.  You can read more about that on the Team Shawn blog.

In a nutshell, Gloria and her team craft all sorts of goodies - everything from seasonal decorations to knit hand-bags to keychains and hair bows and jam.  They are offered for sale at local events (and now at EarthWorks!) and the proceeds of the sales all go to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK" at the Reston Town Center in Reston, VA for research and family support.  That is the spirit of service that we love so much.

This year, the walk is on Saturday, October 20th and their goal this year was to raise $10,000 as the Team Shawn Donation.  You can bet that at Earthworks, through our community, Team Shawn products will fly off the shelves!  We want 2013 to be a great year for the team, and I know we won't be disappointed.  A worthy cause, supporting a local team doing great service!

Team Shawn Raffle

Team Shawn Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Fundraiser:

Please purchase raffle tickets -- and potentially win great prizes! -- to raise money to help those living with blood cancer and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Our children's preschool teacher, Gloria Haines, lost her son, Shawn, to Leukemia 2 years ago when he was only 20 years old. Gloria is a dedicated, wonderful pre-k teacher who gives so much of herself to our kids. We, the parents of pre-k students at the Leesburg Presbyterian Church Preschool, have decided to hold a fundraiser for Team Shawn as our end-of-the-year gift to Gloria.  All proceeds will benefit Team Shawn.

Raffle tickets cost $5 each.  If you purchase 5 or more tickets you will receive a promotional coupon from a local business!  We will accept cash or check -- please make checks out to Team Shawn -- and your donation is tax deductible.  We can provide you with a donation receipt and tax ID number upon request. The raffle will be held at the preschool on May 16th at a private pre-k carnival held for graduating students. We will keep track of the winners and make sure that they are contacted by the end of that week.  You can also check the Team Shawn blog or Facebook page for winner information.

You may purchase tickets from the person who shared this flyer with you (he or she will provide you with raffle tickets shortly after your purchase), or you may purchase tickets from our preschool Director, Elaine, at Leesburg Presbyterian Church Preschool--207 W. Market Street, Leesburg, VA 20176.

These local businesses have generously donated $25, $50 and $100 gift cards, or services or items worth even more, to the Team Shawn raffle!  We will have several more businesses donate prizes before the raffle drawing.
