WHY WE WALK!

Team Shawn was started in 2007 after our oldest son Shawn was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 20. After nearly a two year battle, Shawn ultimately lost the fight. We are here to be advocates on behalf of Shawn and all those who lost their lives fighting blood cancers.

This blog follows Team Shawn and their 2011/2012 fund raising efforts. All proceeds raised will go to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK" at the Reston Town Center in Reston, VA for research and family support. For the past two years, Team Shawn raised a lofty goal of $10,000. We are reaching for the sky this year again! Our goal is to raise another $10,000 for this event! Yes, folks---$10,000! We have many ways to reach this lofty goal. We will reach it and more!!! Along the way we hope to have lots of fun and make new friends as well!

Team Shawn--Light The Night Walk

Team Shawn joined many, many other teams and individuals to fight blood cancers in the 2010 Leukemia/Lymphoma Society's 5th Annual Light The Night Walk in Reston, VA on October 2, 2010. It was a great evening for a walk to help those with cancer, family of cancer patients, and to remember those who have lost the fight to cancer. Everyone had a great time walking and after is was all done--Pizza! Team Shawn did an awesome job fund raising for the cause. The team has many events for the up coming fund raising year.

New Cases, Incidence and Deaths

Every 4 minutes one person is diagnosed with a blood cancer.

An estimated 137,260 people in the United States will be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma in 2010. New cases of leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma will account for 9.0 percent of the 1,529,560 new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States this year*.

Overall incidence rates per 100,000 population for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma are almost identical for data reported in 2009 and 2010 [(leukemia 12.3, 2010 vs.12.2, last year); (NHL, 19.6, 2010 vs. 19.5, last year); (Hodgkin lymphoma, 2.8, 2010, same as last year); (myeloma, 5.6, 2010, same as last year)].

Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma will cause the deaths of an estimated 54,020 people in the United States this year. These blood cancers will account for nearly 9.5 percent of the deaths from cancer in 2010 based on the 569,490 total cancer-related deaths.

Every ten minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. This statistic represents nearly 148 people each day, or more than six people every hour. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. In general, the likelihood of dying from most types of leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma decreased from 1998 to 2007 (the most recent data available).
